A newly founded company, Georgia Solar Utilities Inc, is looking to produce solar power on a utility scale, local newspaper Atlanta Business Chronicle reported on Thursday.

According to the company's application filed with the Public Service Commission in Georgia yesterday, the company plans to generate up to 2 GW of electricity by 2016.

Georgia Solar Utilities' initial goal is solar generating capacity of up to 500 MW, beginning with an 80-MW solar facility near Milledgeville, according to the application.

The move comes as the state's utility monopoly Georgia Power prepares to submit plans for expanding solar energy development to the commission next week, the paper noted.
